Description

Purpose: 

The System Administrator evaluates, implements, and maintains the GISD enterprise, through domain and system administration, email management, network security and services, and server monitoring and security protection.

 

Nature & Scope: 

The Systems Administrator works under supervision of the Technology Director. The nature of the work requires adherence to standard procedures, as well as policies and regulations. Independent judgment and decision making is required in matters not having established procedures. As a member of the Technology Department, the System Administrator engages with highly sensitive information and must maintain absolute integrity of systems and confidentiality of classified data. 

 

Qualifications: 

Education/Certification:

Bachelor’s degree in computer science or management information systems, or equivalent experience in technical support, hardware and software management. 

 

CompTIA A+ certification preferred but not required 

 

Experience: 

Two years' experience with enterprise level daily system administration of operating systems in test and production settings, including server configuration, file systems, devices and device drivers, data communications, monitoring, security, and basic networking (preferred)

 

2 years of experience performing network maintenance

 

Advanced experience with Active Directory in an enterprise environment.

 

Experience with scripting languages used in the administration of enterprise applications.

 

Experience with enterprise application management.

 

Experience with troubleshooting complex technical issues and conducting effective research to resolve problems.

 

Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing. Must read, understand, and follow multi-step written and verbal instructions in English.

 

 

Special Knowledge/Skills:

Knowledge of LAN and WAN network design and installation

 

Knowledge of network hardware and software applications including network servers, printers, and other equipment

 

Knowledge of networking protocols and distributed computing environment concepts,             

 including Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol (TCP/IP), User Datagram Protocol  (UDP) and Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP).

 

Ability to work with multiple operating systems and network protocols

 

Ability to analyze and resolve computer network problems

 

Ability to repair, troubleshoot, diagnose hardware

 

Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills

 

Major Responsibilities and Duties: 

Serves as overall administrator of the District's core information systems and services. Plans, tests,

implements, secures, and provides troubleshooting support.

 

Develops the necessary tools, processes, and documentation needed to maintain movement towards current strategic goals of the District. Research new developments in the field as necessary in order to improve tools and processes.

 

Installs, manages, monitors, and integrates various server and client operating systems. Performs scripting and programming tasks.

 

Administers a variety of database systems.

 

Provides systems monitoring to track technology and data across the district.

 

Provides performance tuning to ensure high levels of data and system availability.

Designs, implements, and provides tier-three support for enterprise desktop services and clients.

 

Administers data backup, disaster recovery, security, and data compliance strategies.

 

Writes technical instructions and documentation.

 

Provides ongoing technical training and mentorship to the Campus Technicians.

 

Manages external relationships/contacts with vendors and consultants in collaboration with the Technology Department Administrators and district personnel.

 

Maintains effective working relationships with other members of the Department as well as other school personnel and community members, including those from diverse cultures or backgrounds or those who speak limited or no English.

 

Complies with all procedures outlined in the Code of Professional Conduct and Annual Notices for Education Practitioners, Teachers, Support Staff, Administrators, Substitutes Handbook, and all other Gonzales Independent School District Policies and Procedures.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

 

Monitors and assigns work for campus technicians

 

Mental Demands/Physical Demands/Enviromental Factors:

Tools/Equipment Used: Hand tools and test instruments for electronic repairs and cable installations; standard office equipment including personal computers and peripherals

 

Posture: Prolonged sitting; regular kneeling/squatting, bending/stooping, pushing/pulling, twisting

 

Motion: Repetitive hand motion; frequent keyboarding and use of mouse; regular walking, grasping/squeezing, wrist flexion/extension, reaching; may climb ladders

 

Lifting: Regular moderate lifting and carrying (up to 44 pounds); occasional heavy lifting and carrying (45 pounds and over)

 

Environment: Occasional prolonged and irregular hours; frequent on-call and after-hours work; occasional district wide travel; may be required to be on-call 24 hours a day; may be exposed to electrical hazards.

 

Mental Demands: Work with frequent interruptions; emotional control under stress
