Job Title: Substitute Teacher
Reports to: Campus Principal
Dept./School: Gonzales ISD Schools
Primary Purpose:
In the absence of the regular classroom teacher to help students to learn subject matter and/or skills that are required for scheduled lessons and to provide meaningful instructions for assigned classrooms within an environment conductive to learning.
Minimum Education/Certification:
High School Diploma or Equivalent
Special Knowledge/Skills
Ability to work well with children and adults
Ability to communicate verbally and written effectively
Background working with children in educational setting
Duties/Responsibilities:
1. Reports to school office at beginning of school day to pick up required materials/schedule of classes and at the end of the school day to return materials. Follows sign out procedures as prescribed by the principal.
2. Carries out a program of study prescribed in the lesson plans left by the classroom teacher.
3. Creates a classroom environment that is conducive to learning and appropriate to the maturity and interest of the students.
4. Guides the learning process toward the achievement of curriculum goals and objectives as indicated in the lesson plans for the lessons, units, or projects assigned.
5. Employs instructional methods and materials that are most appropriate for meeting lessons objectives.
6. Maintains a neat and orderly classroom. Straightens chairs, tables, clear chalkboard, etc.
7. Takes attendance in accordance with school procedures.
8. Indicates to students at beginning of class the basic expectations for behavior in the class in accordance with campus, district and Gonzales ISD School Board policies.
9. Insures that the students are never left unattended in the classroom.
10. May perform duties usually required of absent teacher such as lunchroom or bus duty, hall monitor, etc.
11. Knows emergency evacuation routes for the classrooms assigned.
12. Knows procedures for referring students who are disciplinary problems.
13. Knows school procedures and regulations.
14. Performs other related duties as directed by principal.

Be able to meet mental demands of teaching assignment (i.e. maintain emotional control under stress). Be able to meet physical demands of teaching assignment (i.e. frequent standing, stooping, bending, pulling, and pushing). Be able to maintain an environment conducive to teaching and learning (i.e. treating all students with respect, developing positive relations with students and parents).
